Hatred is alive and well.

Sheesh, I take a few days off from the internet and I find anonymous hatred is still alive and well. How sad. When I see comments like that, I think about how sad their lives must be to lash out to someone they probably don't even know. If being mean to me made their lives better, then so be it. I'm happy to allow a little bit of happiness into their lives.

While someone was thrashing me on my blog, I was in the hospital. I'm embarrassed to even admit what happened, but here it goes ...

I was eating popcorn while making blankets. (mommybird, your blanket went out in the mail yesterday! yay!) I was taking out the pins while I went and also taking handfuls of popcorn. Somewhere my hands got confused, I took out a pin and before I knew it, I swallowed it. I just sat there in shock thinking OMG, I just ate a pin! I told my husband and he told me to call the doctor. I did and they sent me to the Emergency Room. Awesome.

I got an xray right away and went back to the waiting room. Within 2 minutes, I was being called back, the nurse telling me a doctor looked at it and didn't want me to wait. I was put in a bed and leaned way back, feet in the air, to help the pin stay in my stomach. The GI staff was called in (a nurse, a tech and the doctor) and I was put out as they scoped my stomach. I woke up halfway through the procedure and started fighting the scope and they put some more in my IV to get me back to sleep. I woke up later, when I was supposed to, and they told me they couldn't get it. After a consult with the surgeon, I was sent home with instructions to see my PCP the next morning.

I've been getting daily xrays now and the pin seems to be making its way through my GI tract. They want me to "look" for it, but hell no, I just can't do it. I'll just wait until the xray shows it's clear. My next one is tomorrow.

Moral of the story? Don't eat popcorn and sew at the same time.

Oh my! That is the craziest story and one that could probably only come from you. I am glad that you're ok. I wouldn't be looking for it either.

Have you seen the show "Mercy"? The main character is kind of how I would picture you as a nurse. A strong, smart woman that is passionate about her job and helping people...

Ali said...

Nancy! That WOULD happen to you! I hope everything shows clear soon.

Kim said...

I am trying not to laugh, but how you wrote it did cause me to giggle.

Yeah I totally would not be "looking" for it.

This should not be funny but...I'll be on pins and needles waiting to hear that it has safely passed.

Calliope said...

shut the front door!!!! omg
That totally sucks. Hope it, um passes swiftly and smoothly.

Why does all the crazy stuff happen to you, Nancy? Can't you share the exciting adventures with the rest of us?? :)

mommybird said...

Oh my goodness, Nancy! I was worried about you while you were gone, I had no idea I actually had reason to be. I hope everything is clear soon!

You totally didn't need to worry about the blanket while you were going through all of that. Thank you though, I am very excited.

I'll just admit it, your awful pin-encounter made me laugh. As a long-time veteran of many GI procedures I always felt that the people in those waiting rooms had some of the oddest stories to tell (mine: don't eat tapeworms in Africa - not that I did it on purpose). I really hope your pin passes along quickly. I babysat for a family where the little boy swallowed a penny which landed up being the $8000 penny by the time it had made it's well-charted and natural progression from mouth all the way through.

Is it wrong that I laughed? I mean, as long as your ok .... damn.

Hope everything "works out in the end". Heh.

XOXOX

Geez, Nancy. You can always find the thing that no other human has ever experienced before.

Wow. I left a voicemail message for you (well, hopefully for you!) on Saturday because we were in your town. Now I know why you didn't answer the phone!

P.S. Kym cracks me up.

Ella said...

Oh you poor thing!!! That is just crazy, but TOTALLY something that seems really easy to do while eating popcorn and sewing. Good PSA against doing those two things at once... who knew?

I hope it "clears" soon! But I'm with you, you couldn't pay me enough to LOOK for it.

What a crazy life you have. Who woulda thought? I'm glad you're okay though....and hope your x-ray is clear soon.

What is up with people commenting like that? You have mentioned it before but I've never seen any of their comments (I want to go back and look now). I just don't get it.

Jennifer said...

Wow...only you could have a story like that. I couldn't help, but chuckle a little...sorry. I would not look for it either!

Oh no! I hope that pin comes out okay. I'm with you in not wanting to look for it. I can just imagine the look on you face once you realized you swallowed a pin. I will definitely avoid eating and sewing at the same time now.

I swear something like that could only happen to you. Here I thought I was the one with all the bad luck!

I hope the pin doesn't do any damage along the way. I agree, I would not be looking for it either.

I hope everything goes ok....and from now on watch out for those pins!

Crap in the land! That is one of my (what I previuosly thought was totally irrational) fears! Hope it comes out soon and that you are all clear in there ;)

Oh my...mindless popcorn eating gone awry. Hope everything works out ok, but what a harrowing experience!

Jen said...

Oh my! I heard a story about when Jeramy was little and swallowed a toothpick. They were under instructions from the doctor to look for it's exit. Not fun!

Steph said...

Are we talking a straight pin? Safety pin? (open or closed?)

I'm trying not to giggle, but really...

I hope it passes w/o further incedent. (i swallowed a marble once, but I was 5!)

After reading your post all I could think is I hope she doesn't need an MRI.

Um I hope it exits the body as easy as it went in. Maybe you will be in luck and it will be highly visable in the bowl.

oh and as for anonymous hate posters, I would hope they find something more positive to waste their energy on rather then attempting to spread their misery to others.

JJ said...

Good grief, girl! Hope it clears out soon!

Caitlin said...

I have to admit I laughed a little, too.

I hope it gets out without causing any damage!!

Birdee said...

Sewing will never be the same again, I'll allways think of you and giggle just a little at your story. I hope it comes out safely.

Miss Tori said...

Oh shit Nancy! What a thing to get mixed up. I'm glad everything is okay so far. Can't blame you for not wanting to inspect the poo for the needle.

Mareike said...

I've searched a lot of dog poop for swallowed stuff but I have to admit I wouldn't want to search my own. I imagine the pin will make a safe exit (or perhaps by now it has.)

Crunchy Green Mom - Suzanne said...

That is sooo funny. I know.. I am like many of the others so I feel okay laughing.

You crack me up and I love that you do!

Hey.. I'm gonna be down in your neck of the woods next week (Manitou) maybe we can do coffee or something!

Photogrl said...

OMG!

I hope it passes easily...what a story!

Only you, Nancy, only you.

((HUGS))

Love the annoymous comments, nothing better than someone spilling their own misery all over other people. Sorry about your accident. I cannot tell you how many times I have done stupid things just like that, luckily I have yet had to explain it to someone in the ER. Hope the pin keeps working it's way out.

docgrumbles said...

oh wow - lesson learned!

Hope you poop out that pin soon (though that doesn't sound very pleasant)!

Jamie said...

That story is scary, crazy and yet sort of awesome at the same time. I think the awesome part is that you shared it!

I'm with you - just the swallowing of the pin (and your pride!) is punishment enough without digging through your poop to find it. That's what x-rays are for!!

Glennformer said...

Wow, you'll do anything to chalk up another surgery and add to your record. I hope this doesn't rise to the level of the fork-biting phobia. It gives new meaning to "the fantastic voyage". If you were still on Sprint, you'd be able to hear the pin drop. I hope everything turns out alright--no, wait, turning might not be good.

It's all my fault. When you gave me the non-pointy-ended pins to throw away, I should have put them back in the pile, secretly, to increase the odds that you'd get one of those to swallow accidently. What was I thinking??!!!

kimbosue said...

Only you, girl! Hope it doesn't sew your hoohoo together! Happy passing!
