A little ~too~ well done.

I had a sweet tooth last night to decided to make pop tarts.

I set the toaster and sit down on the couch waiting for it to pop. I start smelling them burn, which confused me as I set the toaster on low. I walk into the kitchen to find smoke billowing out from where the toaster sits.

As I turn the corner, I see HUGE FLAMES and I yell for Tom to come in because there is a fire. He runs in to find the toaster on fire and I was reaching for the fire extinguisher under the sink. In a flash, he unplugs the toaster (I couldn't reach it) and dumps water over it.

We immediately removed the smoldering toaster from the house and turned on our attic fan to remove the smoke. The cabinets over the toaster are hot to the touch and the dishes inside are all warm. ~whew~. I almost had a catastrophe on my hands. All over a pair of pop tarts.

Do you think they still look good enough to eat?

Those darn toasters cause so many problems. My mom had that same toaster at her house and it nearly burned down their house too. I'm glad you escaped a total catastrophe.

Holy crap- looks so much worse than it sounds! And no- poptarts do not look that good anymore! How about a nice safe apple instead- or even ice cream!

I'm sorry, but your picture made me laugh my ass off! They look, ummm..tastey! I'm glad nothing too disasterous happened!

Wow! You were really lucky to have caught it before it got really bad. Kitchen fires have a way of causing major damage.

(note to self: stop putting toast in toaster and going out to get mail/bring in dog)

So glad you two were able to avert a crisis! Good job!

I'm the anxious sort when it comes to food - and by anxious, I mean that I'm anxious for it to be done so I can eat it. Therefore, I stand over the toaster until it pops! But, toasters are the bane of my existence. I cannot find one that works properly, and when I do, the handle breaks off and I can't use it any more.

Our oven thermometer broke while I was making cupcakes once. They turned out exactly like your pop tart.

Oh, and I would totally email the manufacturer of that toaster and make them send you one that works and won't burn your house down.

Holy crap! - situations like that are so scary.

Love the pic though! I'm voting for no, you shouldn't still eat them ;)

Exactly what Kym said.

Off topic: I'm going to Roller Derby next week in Denver. Woohoo! I picked my rollername (if I were actually playing): PrincessDIE!

I'm sure I'll think of you all night.

Next time, eat them raw.

Or just get a new toaster. Pretty scewed up though! Hope there was no major damage to anything but the toaster..

What were you cooking, the Devil's Pop Tarts?

Jen said...

Yeah, I for sure would not eat those. I would say give them to the birds, but, well, I don't even know if the birds would eat those. They may be to crispy even for them.

I'm so glad that this didn't turn into a much worse situation. I think you need to go buy a new toaster tomorrow.

This has happened to me before - twice! Once in college when my room mates and I lived in a tinderbox of a house. The cabinets were exactly as you described. We had a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and I used it while my 4 roomies were getting dressed and the music was way too loud for them to hear me screaming! And the second time in my toaster oven and my daughter stood there watching it in total horror and silence. Two years later she is still terrified of fire. Glad your situation turned out well like mine did (twice!)

Wait - I just read all the comments and the toaster is being blamed. Its the pop tart's fault!! The goo inside gets too hot and starts to boil - at least that is what Kelloggs told my room mate many moons ago. Or General Mills - whoever makes Pop Tarts!

You HEAT your pop tarts? That's where you went wrong. Nobody actually "pops" their pop tarts.

That is scary. Toasters are frequently the culprit in kitchen fires. Glad y'all didn't lose anything except the toaster.

Glad you didn't burn your house down. That would be really scary. That makes me realize that I need to make sure we still have a fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink.

Eeek! I don't use a toaster because I can never get them to work right. Now I'll be scared to keep trying! Pop tarts & toast go under the broiler with a little butter on top. Mmmmmm.

See -- now i have proof that pop tarts are the root of all evil -- as I continuously tell the men in my house....

Eek! Glad it ended well. That looks like the type of toaster I have.

So, do you call that carmelized?

I wouldn't eat them as is but, just like sometimes I want a little zest of orange on something, other times I want a little zest of charcoal, so I'd use it for that.

When I first read this I for some reason read that you set the toaster on the couch. I was like "no wonder it caught on fire." haha

I was reading the comments and I like pop tarts toasted too it's not weird. I haven't had them in ages though.

Microwaves can catch on fire too.

You can also catch things on fire with the broiler.

I know from experience in both cases...thankfully nothing major.

Glad all is okay...enjoy your pop tarts. :P
