Do you know ~that~ person?

You know, that person who will always either one-up you or contradict ANYTHING you ever say?

Like if you say you love your new car, they say something like "I had that car and loved it too, until I traded in for a better model".

Or

You say how you are bored with your current job and they say they have the same job and go on and on and on and on about how much they love it and all the fun things they do with it?

It's really irritating. Really.

I wonder if people like this act this way to EVERYONE or just one person? It would be way more annoying to find out you were the only person they acted like this too, but if that was the case, I could just determine this person was simply jealous of you. Less annoying if they were like this to everyone because you could just say this person is simply a bitch.

Any which way you cut it, still irritating.

I think we are all that person at some point, but hopefully not all day every day. I know sometimes after a conversation I'll realize that I did that without meaning to. More as a commiserating, "I've been there", sort of understanding. Even though I've been guilty of it, it doesn't make it any less irritating when I'm at the other end of it. I'm sure there are some that do it to just one person, and it's jealousy. Then there are others who are just bitches to everyone!

Oh Yeah? Well I had a friend who was way worse than that, she two up's on me.
;)

J/k.

Yes I know the type, Sometimes I wonder if I do that just in my efforts to relate to the person, but I am aware that it's done so I try not too.

I know one like that. In my observation they are like that to everyone. I am sure I've said something stupid like that but hopefully no more than a handful of times.

I hate that! I call them the one-uppers...I know clever (sarcasm). I can't even talk to people like that.

I have a friend who always has a tale of greater accomplishment or more devastating woe. And she does it even with third-party stories -- ie, stories of other people. Like, you can say that your poor friend got cancer right as her husband left her for a 19-year-old and her house got swept away in a tornado, and this friend of mine will say that she knew someone who had all of those things happen AND they were audited by the IRS. It happens every time.

I agree with kaci....I think we can all do that sometimes unintentionally, and I have had conversations where I look back and think "crap, did I just come across as rude?" when maybe I was just distracted, making conversation or as kaci mentioned, commiserating. However, for someone who does it repetitively...it probably does stem a bit from jealousy.

Kaci and Katie - I'm definitely not talking about the random time we all accidentally do that. I'm talking about the one who does it each and every time.

My gramie calls this the game of "Can you top this?". Usually, there's only a specific person that the "topper" feels threatened by; but sometimes, it's all people. For example, I have a friend and my illustration of her is "you have cancer? Oh, I have more cancer."

I have a friend just like this, and yes, it is annoying!

Ha, my SIL comes to mind....she always has to be the "better" one, usually by commenting on how "bad" everyone else is. Classic example with her is if she starts to gain weight (she bounces around a lot); she will start commenting on how many other people we know have gained weight too and it always sounds a little something like this "Well, I mean I know I need to get back on my diet but have you SEEN so and so lately?!?" or the other day we were talking about chemical free diapers and such and she goes "Yeah, my friend up here uses them and can really tell a difference with diaper rash, but as you know I used regular diapers and they were fine because both of my baby's thighs were too skinny to get chaffing"

Ha I say....HA....

OMG! I think I just Realized, Reed Does That!
Dylan and I make fun of him and finish his comments with "Yeah, and you had to walk to school in the snow up hill both ways" (lmao) but he's a good guy and doesnt do it all the time. lol, usually when he's not paying attention.

Haha...I think they're like that all the time usually, and you're right, it's still annoying. Like when you mention how sick you were during the first trimester, and they come back to say how they threw up every single day and twice on Thursday. It gets old.

Man Nancy... seems like you are talking about 95% of my friends! They are all so self obsorbed and are ALWAYS right. Drives me friggin crazy!

Oh yeah...I know THAT person. She's the one who in a group of people who unless she can be the center of attention is uncomfortable and has to make a point to let everyone else know her opinion on whatever subject. Ughh.

YES!! It makes me wonder if ~I~ do that to people!!

The person must be very insecure to always keep interjecting and doing the "one-up"
I try to avoid those types - there's no real conversation anyway

yes, a million times yes. My SIL for one, is allllllways like that. If we go on vacation, she has to go on a more expensive, more exotic trip. If we have a theme wedding, so does she, but twice as much. It's absolutely annoying. In the end, it doesn't make them look better then us...it just makes them look like asses.

My MIL is like that. No matter what I've done she's done it 20 times bigger and better. Drives me nuts. On Saturday Night Live they have a recurring character that always have a bigger and better story and she goes to major extremes, can't remember the name of the character but the actress is Kristin Wiig. Even though the skits are meant to be exagerated and funny, I still get extremely annoyed with her!
