Problem?

Under incision, its swollen locally, literally like huge golfball under skin. It's starting to bruise like crazy too, which I would expect. I have never seen anything like this. Normal? It's not swollen anywhere else. I've had a lot of laparoscopies which means many incisions. It's never, EVER, done anything like this. It doesn't hurt anymore than I would think, but it's super scary looking. Let me take a picture to show you. I'll update in a moment.

Warning ... this is super gross. So gross I'm not even going to display it outright. And I'm really embarrassed about it too, so please, if you can't help, please don't check it out just for the ick factor. I'm asking you to refrain from looking as a real, honest request. But if you think you can help, click here to see it.

Mate I have no idea but I'm thinking of you. Hopefully it'll just shrink down.

Could be some trapped fluid?

nancy said...

it's not fluid. It's hard.

nancy said...

well, at least I don't think it is. I shouldn't throw any idea out.

Does the lump feel warmer to the touch than your normal skin?

nancy said...

No. But I ~just~ had the surgery 6 hours ago. And the lump swelled up after the ride home, which was only 2 1/2 hours after the surgery, so i wouldn't think an infection could even happen that quickly?

GeekByMarriage said...

A lump can be from a small collection of blood called a hematoma. If these do not get infected, they will get absorbed by the body over time.

Sometimes a small collection of clear fluid can occur (a seroma). If tender, it can be drained.

I had a lump similar to that after my tubal ligation and again after my ectopic surgery, it wasn't that big and didn't hurt so I ignored it and it went down more and more every day. If it's causing you more pain than just the "normal" incision pain I would call the doc or the hospital Ask A Nurse right away.

It's GIANT.

And thanks for your advice. The ask-a-nurse is closed and I don't want to page on call doctor. I'll call in the morning but wanted to know if anyone knew anything.

I'm sorry I could be more help. I'm hoping it's just a pocket of trapped fluid and it will go away on it's own. You've been through enough!

When I had my tubes tied and gallbladder out, that didn't happen to me. But I think Heather might be right. I hope it goes away by morning and things are just swollen right now. Thinking about ya!

It sounds like Heather may be right. But, I'm a huge worrier, so I'd call when the doctor's office opens.

Page the doctor if you need to, they chose to work in a profession where they get calls in the night. It sounds/looks like a hematoma and it's pretty big. Just call if you are still worried. Hope it gets better!

How is it today Nancy? Is it any better? My gut reaction is that Heather is correct but, if it hasn't gotten any better or if there is any noticeable heat or any red streaks extending out away from it, then you need to go in ASAP.

I would watch it for 24-36 hours. If it continues to look like that..you need to call teh Dr and have them see it. It could be a really minor infection, but if it continues...god with your luck, it could turn into the Swine Flu...

I'm thinking it's a hematoma too. Mine counldn't be seen, just felt on exam, but I think that is what they look like. Call the Dr. as my mom is ALWAYS reminding me that is their job and what you pay them for - they expected it when they chose this profession.

I'm too afraid to look, but you definitely want to get the doctor back to check you out by the sounds of it.

Yikes! Hope you feel better soon...

Holy shit that looks like a hernia or something. Hope you're ok.

Nic said...

It could be a haematoma, if so I will gradually get reabsorbed and go down, but I would still get it checked by a doctor as it a bigger haematoma than I have ever seen

Truck Driver Wife said...

Not a normal thing. Is it warm to touch? Looks to me like a seroma and they can get infected easily. If it gets warm to touch call your doctor. I would still call the doctor and tell them about it.

Kristin said...

It could possibly be a collection of fluid. I've never had a lap. but could it be air caught in your abdomen? I second calling the doctor this morning. Good luck.

Any updates on this thing?

Hernia?

I'm basically a medical idiot LOL but when I had my gallbladder out the surgeon told my husband to not even let me lift the baby for 3-4 days (like that was gonna happen) because anytime you have abdominal/stomach area surgery you are at risk for a hernia. I dunno.

My MIL had a hernia and it was very hard, too.

My suggestion may be totally stupid or off-the-wall, but I really, seriously hope that's gone or you've gotten an answer by now.

You poor thing.

Ok, so I'm late on this one, but I agree a lot with what heather said. If it isn't anymore painful than the surrounding area or warm(er) to the touch it may be a hematoma or seroma and will reabsorb. My only issue is that it is hard as you say. If it hasn't gone down or becomes sore or more red in 24 hours OR you start to run a fever...see a doc.

emilythehopeless said...

update! hope it's better {hugs}

The Jensens said...

Oh My! I hope it goes down. With all my surgeries down there I've never had anything like that. Good luck and feel better!
