IUI question for anyone to answer

(By the way - THANK YOU for all the topic suggestions! I'm going to get to them all over the next few days, so don't think I'm just ignoring them. I will answer/discuss each and every one!)

I have a question for anyone who has gone through an IUI....

How much time transpired between the time the sample was dropped off to the lab for washing and the time the actual insemination was performed?

My RE had me schedule the sample drop off 45 minutes before each IUI, so the insemination could happen within the hour. And I think this was what most other girls I know reported, but maybe that's not a universal "rule".

I ask because a friend of mine dropped off his sample this morning and his wife's insemination wasn't scheduled until early afternoon. It struck me as strange, but maybe more docs do that than I am aware of.

I think we had a 1-2 hour window. Definitely not more than that.

Mine have been about an hour to an hour 1/2 after.

Mine was dropped off about 20 minutes before iui- but we were the only ones there at that point. We also got there within a half hour of sample making... although they say to be there within the hour. -maybe that's what did it! ;)

Hubby left his sample an hour before we went back for the IUI. Max 75 minutes elapsed.

By the time the sample was "made," we had an hour to an hour and a half window of waiting while they washed it. We then drove with it about 15 minutes away and took it with us to the doctor and didn't actually hand it to them until I was in the room getting into the stirrups. So total would be about 1 1/2 to 2 hours total.

I think ours were always about an hour after, but I can't remember for sure (funny how those details fade into the background). The idea was for me to be there and ready to go as soon as they were done washing the sample. The time needed to wash the sample also depended on how busy they were that day.

Mine were always within a 1/2 hour or hour, but I did have the option of having my hubby produce the sample at home, dropping it off before 8am and not having the IUI until a few hours later. I guess they keep the sample in a favorable environment till then...

I did one (totally pointless) IUI, and there were at least a couple of hours in between drop-off and pick-up.

My DH had to do the deed at the clinic, since our home is too far away. He gave his sample, and I came in for the IUI exactly an hour afterwards.

Ours was about an hour. We did ours "in house" though, and they prepped me while they did the washing. Either way it would have been an hour - we just didn't feel like fighting traffic more than once, since it was bright and early at 8am.

Our time frame was one and a half hour maximum.

Our "donation" was turned in about 9:30 and we waited in the office for the wash to be completed. They handed it back by 10:15 and we walked straight to the RE's office and the IUI was done promptly after our arrival. We were told the more time that transpired between donation time and IUI time, the more swimmers could die.

I had to drop it off within a half hour of my appointment and then was inseminated within 45 minutes in most cases, only once did it take longer, I think it was no longer than an hour though.

Argh! You're making me THINK about this one! It's been awhile, but I want to say it was within a couple of hours. I seem to remember being able to drop off the sample, grab some breakfast together, and then head back to the clinic for the IUI.

DH did his on site, but I think they had me come back about an hour after he finished.

We were told 45 minutes to an hour. However, once they had to do more than the usual "wash" due to some white blood cells in the "sample". That took quite a bit longer, approx. 2 1/2 hours. So, if they were anticipating having to do additional, uhh, processing (for lack of a better term) they may have planned for more time.

I believe we were supposed to drop off the sample within an hour of production. So I dropped it off when they opened at 8am. The nurse then told me she'd see me back at 9:30. So I had breakfast, went and picked Josh up and was back in about an hour and a half.

I had 5 (pointless) IUIs, and always would come back 1 or 2 hours later, depending on their schedule/my work schedule. I believe they said the maximum amount of time they would allow between drop-off and insemination was 3 hours.

Yeah Nancy that is strange. Why in the world would they schedule the IUI like that? Thats 5hrs after drop off. When we did mine. We started the wash at home as soon as the specimen was collected. We mixed some pink stuff with some pill that dissolved then poured over the sperm. It took us 45mins to get to the lab, then 1 1/2hrs for the semen to get washed. So my IUI took place at 9:30am. I'd def have her ask why they are doing it 5hrs later???

When we had an IUI, the time between my hubby providing the sample (at the doctor's office) and the actual insemination was an hour and a half.
