Just a little question ...

There are about a half a dozen of people in my reader who are pregnant and their posts lately have really been nothing more than just a cut/paste of "what is happening this week in your pregnancy".

And I understand it's their blog and they can post anything they want. I'm definitely not suggesting they shouldn't have this in their blog. But ... my question is ~why~ is it in their blog? Are they putting it out their for family members and friends to know what's happening with the pregnancy? Are they just stuck for lack of anything else to blog about?

I just don't know how or what to respond to these types of blogs. I feel rude when I just click away because I have absolutely nothing to say more than "Yup, that's what's going on."

So tell me - when you come across these blogs, what kinds of comments do you have? Do you actually read them? And if you are someone who does this in their blog, are you looking for certain comments?

I certainly sound rude no matter what right now because it's like I am dissing what some are blogging about. But as I've seen so many blog this way over the past 2 years, I'm simply getting up the balls to ask this to my readers. So please forgive me. I know I blog about things that other people could ask the same question to!

----
Update ... I am NOT talking about blogging about baby updates. I'm talking about cutting and pasting the generic "ba.by c.enter" or "we.bm.d" emails about each week of pregnancy.

Usually, when it's written like that my comment is along the lines of: "Congratulations on 18th or whatever the week is... wish them good health and God Bless."
I agree, there's not much else that one can contribute in such situations.

Perhaps they're tired :o)
But I actually do read the blogs and the comments.

I don't comment on those but I think some people blog to have a sort of scrapbook they can keep looking back on so perhaps they post it for themselves. Just like I post my beta numbers and u/s numbers during an ivf cycle to keep track for me much more than for others.

Just a thought.

If I comment it's usually along the lines of "Crazy, man, that is fucked up that your baby is doing..." because those descriptions always have something weird and creepy in them.

I usually glaze over that part of a post and I don't comment on it.

Since I've been blogging it's been about little other than infertility and now pregnancy. It has been the biggest thing happening in my life for the past 3years; so I have a difficult time blogging about other stuff right now. Work is strictly off limits since a bunch of my nosy co-workers read. I care about politics but mostly don't care to post my opinion on them. I started out blogging to chronicle TTC and pregnancy. I don't know what our blog will morph into after the baby's born.

I suck at commenting anyway, so I just don't comment. When I was pregnant, I posted so infrequently that I didn't use the this-week-in-your-pregnancy filler. Apparently this is a long winded way of saying, "I don't know."

Melody, I'm definitely not talking about blogging about pregnancy. Hell, that's all I do. But the pure cut/pastes about where you are that you get in a weekly email or something. Just the generic "what's happening" things.

MY SIL had it on hers and no one commented on the ones she cut and pasted. Now on the rare occasion she wrote about it herself...like the baby is the size of a sesame seed...and he has a penis now...she would sometimes get a comment.

I personally just scroll through those posts really quickly...skim for non bab.ycen.ter stuff and move on.

But I think the people paste it to share with family and don't want to trim it?!?!?

I don't think I fall into this category but for awhile I would post something on the day I entered a new week but it was more of a "Yeah I made it!!" not so much to say what was going on in that particular week.

I post updates on my pregnancy on my blog cause my Mom lives in FL, Dad lives in CO, and I am here in CT.

My intention is not to only write about pregnancy, and by all means you should NEVER feel bad for just clicking away..I do it too.

I know that I come to your blog to read what is going on with you and your pregnancy just like I did when you TTC. I think there are a lot of people out there that read my blog just to find out what's going on in my pregnancy and life. Right now, my life is pretty much about the pregnancy. I'll be thrill when it's not but then the posts will likely turn to posts about newborns and how I forgot so much in 3 short years.

I do however, look forward to blogging about my first date night un-pregnant! Or going to the bar and seeing a live band.

I can't wait to start jogging again.. So maybe I will being to write about something other than babies! lol

I don't understand why anyone would post something that was cut and pasted from another site. What sense it that? I haven't come across those but I don't think I could leave a comment either.

My blog was created for friends and family and also as a journal for my son's baby book. I never expected comments from anyone (other than family but they always call me or email to comment on my blog instead of commenting on the blog itself) but I got a ton from people anyways. It became the running joke about what kind of fruit or veggie my baby was being compaired to actually.

It's not for everyone though!

I do it for myself, my husband, and extended family and friends. I do not expect or want comments on these posts. I had a friend that would e-mail me these things with her pregnancy (I found them interesting) and she and others asked if I would be doing the same. We plan to put the blog on a CD and keep it in a baby book so it’s a kind of this is how you were growing; and I plan to use my personal this is what is happening or how I felt this week posts to compare future pregnancies.

I don't read them at all - it is cool for the person posting them to keep it as a reminder of where they are in their pregnancy, but for me personally I just click away...

Well, I think it's mainly first-time mums, who are so blown away by what's happening in their bodies, they just want to share the mind-blowingnessness.

NEWSFLASH .... Nancy, my favourite auntie is moving to America. I'm thinking of planning a visit to see her. Where does she live? DENVER COLORADO. yeah baby. XOX

I don't think I comment on those unless there is something beyond the cut & paste.
& now I feel like a slacker because I haven't even READ those developmental sites. doh!

I assume they're doing it as their blog is something they're keeping for memory, scrapbook, that kind of thing. But like you, I don't know what to say.

Hmmm...I've never came across one like that yet. BORING! J/k! I mean people can blog about what they want-but really, what do they expect people to say?

nancy said...

I never thought of the fact women can use their blogs as their own journal. I have my pregnancy journals too - but I never thought of using my blog.

How can you save a blog for years to come? Is there a way to print them all out?

CJ said...

I don't comment on those posts about what the baby is doing at that certain week from Babycenter.com. If they do it all the time, I just delete their blog from my list.

It's not personal when people do that and I am more interested in people's lives not what babycenter says! LOL! Obviously, I don't do that. Half the time, I don't say anything about my pregnancy until something new pops up.

I usually don't even read them and just move on.

Nancy on your question about printing out your blog to keep them. My blog is only about my boys and there is a reason for that. I am using it as their baby books. Every year (this will be the first year) I will print it out into a book. I use the website www.blurb.com I got this idea from another blog I read and love it.

I don’t say much if anything. I feel rude too. (not that I come across many blogs like that)

My thing is I just wished more women would get down and dirty with what's going on with them. Like you for instance, you're belly disappeared - then came back - that was so freaking fun and entertaining, I loved the pics too. I wished more women would talk about what is going on with them through their pregnancy.
But I suppose if it's uneventful - well - good for them. I'd rather them have no news than bad news.

Jenny McCarthy's book "Belly Laughs" is a perfect example though of Down and Dirty with Pregnancy, and I don’t care how uneventful a pregnancy is, there are just some things No Pregnant Lady Can Escape. And maybe I'm sick in the head, but I like reading about it.
It makes me just want to give them a big squeeze and say "Aww Yes - The joys of pregnancy". Because it really is a joy. (imo)

Not that I do this, but I can see why someone might. I plan on printing my blog into a book, so it's basically a personal yet public journal. I know someone that has had her first two years of blogging made into a book and she had a copy for all 5 of her children made (yes 5!). :) She's going to give it to them when she's older.

I actually enjoy those posts on other blogs just to see what's going on during a certain week and I post them myself to keep my family and non-pregnant/IF friends "in the know". Sometimes I honestly don't know what to blog about and it does fill some space, because I think it gets dull to say "yeah, so I had weird dreams and got up to pee AGAIN last night" for the 12th day in a row. :-)

Well, anyone can blog, they don't actually have to be a writer of any sort.

I think a lot of girls end up talking about pregnancy details especially for #1 because it's very new to them. Even the sappy newsletters.
