We got robbed.

Maybe it was Karma for me talking smack about Tampa Bay fans and scrapbookers... ~wink~

I logged into my bank account yesterday to get a phone number and saw someone used our debit card number to buy $1,173.76 worth of stuff at walmart. (how white trash is that?)

We still have our card in our possession, so someone typed in the card number at the register (confirmed by bank), meaning the cashier was either really stupid to take card # off of a piece of paper or the cashier was in on it or the cashier was the one who stole the number.

Reported it to the bank. Filed police report. Blah blah blah.

What a hassle.

I still stand by my list of 10 though!

Oh no - that's horrible! I would feel violated in a way!

There's also a chance it was used for online purchases? That way, they don't need to have your card physically. Did you ever use this card online somewhere?

Sorry - I hope your bank will protect your balance and pay you back the amount stolen. I'm not sure how that works though - but I would imagine you'd be insured against these kind of situations.

That sucks. I wanted to let you know though that it could be a random generator theft. I would also go back and look for small amounts for strange purchases like flowers etc. I have had my debit card hacked twice in the last year, both times my bank caught it and both times my card was in hand. They explained there are thieves who have large operations and have random card generators and they just try combos until they get it. Very frustrating.

Thanks for the sweet comments too.

Nope. That card is ~never~ used in online transactions and it was at our local walmart. So most likely a local crime.

oh - and they have the register it was used at, etc. I'm totally pressing charges, just waiting for all the pieces to come in!

Damn! I hope they catch the person. That stinks.

Oh shit! That sucks. I hope they figure out who it was so you can nail their ass to the wall.

OH MY GOD! Seriously...how rediculous are people?? I am so sorry this happened to you.

They probably made a new card with your numbers on it but with someone else's name printed on it. Because they are counterfeit cards, the magnetic strip doesn't always work and so that is why the cashier entered the number in manually. The card looks legit and the name on it will match any photo ID they ask for. I wouldn't blame the cashier - most likely she had no clue it was a stolen card number.

This is what I do for a living all day. Really. I investigate all kinds of bank fraud.

17 Hundred dollars at Wal-Mart?

That just sucks.

ARGHGHGH! Does't that just piss you off? What a fucking hassle!

Aggie, they already confirmed with the register it was typed in, not swiped.

Shit, Nancy, that sucks! At least you caught it and the banks will take care of the $$. I would press charges, too. WTH were they buying at Walmart that cost that damn much, Jeeze! People suck!

this confirms my suspicions that scrapbookers are some craaa-zy bitches.

I hate to say it- but it probably was the cashier. A chick I worked with in retail years ago was dumb enough to do exactly the same thing. She was caught.

Sorry it happened and I hope you get your hard-earned back. That's just sucky.

How terrible! Someone stole our credit card number last summer and it sucked. To think someone was spending OUR money really pissed me off.

Sorry Nancy!

That just plain sucks!

That sucks. Maybe it was one of those card readers that thieves put on at gas stations or something. That has happened a lot around here lately.

SO Frustrating! We had a similar experience a few months backs, except the assholes KEPT USING the card! As soon as I noticed the problem I called my CU & they put a stop on it and blah blah blah... BUT, there were already transactions "in process" that were swiped (on a fake card) and approved, but still had to clear.

We got all the money back within a week, but it was so aggravating to log into the account 2 days in a row and see MORE money missing!

Our assholes were using the card in NY state, so I didn't go thru the hassle of trying to prosecute. I should call & ask the CU to see if they followed up on it at all.

OMG, that is terrible. But I agree, how stupid to spend that much money at Walmart. Was this person so stupid that they thought they could actually get by with this. I mean I think it's common sense that they can tell which register at what time your card was used at, therefore pinpointing the cashier. That's really sad that somebody can actually be that stupid. Hopefully they don't get scared or get an inside warning from management, and "disappear" before things are settled.

That sucks! I am so sorry! That happened to me last christmas - I swear the teen at the register at Petsmart stole my credit card number - and charged over $2,000 on it. What a pain in the ass. My credit card company paid it off for me though - thankfully. I hope your bank protects you.

Ugh! How horrible! I agree that you TOTALLY need to press criminal charges when/if the suspect is found. The time, stress and emotional hassle alone are worth pursuing the a-holes who did this. I hope your bank is being helpful and cooperative with the entire situation.

I didnt' know they could even do that! And man, if *I* was going to steal from you, it'd soooooo not be at Walmart. You can probably guess where *I'd* go shopping;-)

That really sucks, sorry to hear that! What a hassle.

On a completely unrelated matter, I was just looking at your comparison belly pics. Was showing them to my almost 5 year old son, so he could see just how big the belly's going to get.

He looks and says "Wow. She looks lik a tough lady with a tattoo and strong muscles." I love it!!!! I love the things these kids come up with. If your daughter is 4, you know what I mean. Where he gets it from, I have no idea.

My husband has a tat on his forearm, and I have a very teeny one on my ankle. So don't worry, he would never run from you in a grocery store!

Ahh man! That sucks! Hopefully everything will be figured out. I'm always paranoid when waitresses take my card back. Anyone can write down the info real quick.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cashier was involved either. I worked retail and it's officially "season" when they'd be hiring a bunch of people. That's when we got some of our worst.

I hope that everything will get sorted out and you won't be responsible for all that money!

A thousand bucks at walmart? That IS white trash!

I'm so sorry you and the fam has had to go through that. It stinks big time!

Holy shit! WHat the hell is at Walmart you can spend that much $$ on. Maybe they got cash back too. I think the most I have ever spent at Walmart is like $300-$400 and that was buying food and things for when I had my son in 2001. So I cant imagine how much stuff it would take to spend that much money. Damn they must have had the whole line with carts. STUPIDS!

I had my Paypal DEbit card number stolen online. They bought some dumb shit too. Ties, Weight loss patch things, Some kind of pills of some sort, some membership thing to somewhere. But get this. They had my name and address too and they frickin had the stuff sent to my house. What kind of thief steals a card # and buys things for the person LMAO I was so mad. It took several days but I was able to get it all taken care of too. ANd one place was fighting with me telling me that there is no way I didnt make the charge. They they relaized that whoever did it had spelled my name wrong and messed up my address and gave a fake phone # for me. So I had them with that and I was like ummm why would I mis-spell my own name. Im not that stupid thanks...Keep us updated on this. Im anxious to see how this turns out.

Wow- that sucks, I'm sorry you have to go through that hassle!

Over a grand at Walmart eh, somebodies living large on your dime! ;o)

Hollie said...

Crapola Nancy! Sorry about the theft. I would go and tear a new one in someone at Walmart. They should not take a card number off of a piece of paper!

JW Moxie said...

Damn! That would have sent me for a total tailspin. I hope there's some way your money will be recouped.
