I just got the bill from delivering Karl. Hospital for ~me~ only. Not covering any of the separate charges like OB, cardiologist, gas passers, etc. Just the hospital bill for me.)
Ready?
$24,837.80
~gasp~
(my portion is a whole $465, but still. $25 thousand? fuck.)

Wow, babies are sure expensive. What happens if you don't have insurance? Who pays that bill?
Hmmm, makes me wonder how much it costs to deliver, let's say, um, eight babies??
$25,000 sure does seem high.
Wow, and I thought my almost $6000 bill was high!
Geez, and I thought mine was huge!
Mind you, that is the hospital billed amount. Having insurance brought that down to under $5,000. (yes, that is how much the uninsured gets stuck with).
Are you sure??? Did you go to the Ritz Plaza to delivery or what!
I went privately and it only cost max 2000 euros or so, that's just to give birth and stay in a nice room and watch telly and eat so called catered food, it also included the obstetrics fee and epidural but still, 25 grand!!! I reckon they made a mistake. Did they quote you before or not?
SOmetimes I wonder just how those sort of figures are arrived at. Glad you only pay a wee portion.

holy S*%&
I am dreading my bill...my insurance sucks when it comes to Hospital care...L&D included.
That sounds about right. My last c-section to deliver my surro-son came up to almost $22K. With insurance, my intended parents only had to pay $200. Scary without insurance, isn't it?
It's always scary what the cost is before insurance! My kidney surgery- 2 night stay- was nearly $60 grand! I paid $300 & the reduced cost was less than $30 grand. Insane...
when carson was born he got transferred to childrens hospital nicu. the combined bill for the two of us was over 60000. bonus is w/ my lovely insurance we are responsible for the first 5000 and then 20% up till 11000. needless to say i have huge medical debt now!
Wow. Just, wow.
Thank GAWD I live in Canada - cuz delivering babies here? With no insurance or nothing? Zero dollars. Babies should be free to deliver everywhere (at least for those of us responsible enough not to have 6 children already, and another 8 on the way...).
Thank goodness for insurance!
My four day stay in the hospital for the DVT was 30K (I didn't have to pay for any of it, even my ER co-pay was waived) which was a blessing.
I am sure that my delivery will be in the high range too especially if they induce since it will be done over two days and all of the consults I will require (MFM, hematologist, OB, midwives, cardiologist, pediatrician and pediatric urologist!).
btw, I show everyone the pictures of Karl that comes over. My mom was in love.
Holy crap. Is that just delivery/pp recovery, or is that the D&C and care for your heart issues as well?

I like to scroll through hospital charges where I work just to shock myself sometimes.
Did they send you an itemized bill? I think one unit of blood is around $1000. Hell, just a bag of plain IV fluid is $100. Everytime we stick someone's finger for a blood sugar - $25. It's amazing.
That was everything for the hospital stay for ~me~ (Karl's stay hasn't been billed yet.) I will get an itemized bill, I always ask for one to put in the baby book, I was just waiting for the initial bill. So this was for ME - the version, delivery, emergency surgery, heart stuff, etc.
I got a bill from cardiologist too and from my OB, so there is still all that to figure in. Oh - and the gas passers. But from hospital alone, it was $25k.
Once I get EVERYTHING in, I'll list the total cost of delivery.
note - very normal - the bill from my other deliveries were almost as much (but due to no surgery, a few grand lower).
JaimeD - yes - I love that! The most shocking to me was the can of spray stuff they give you after birth - the stuff that costs $6 at walgreens. Hospital charged me $65!
All I can say is WOW! And, thank God I live in Canada!
Wow ! Wow ! and Wow !
I love health insurance. Hey, maybe everyone should have it. I know -- crazy idea.
Can of spray stuff after birth? Explain to me; I don't remember that!
I wish I would have gotten a total itemized bill from the hospital, but I only got the amount of the bills I owed...197.00 for anesthesia, 300.00 for the "doctor" portion of the delivery and post-partum care, 293.00 for Cullen's circumcision and 100.00 for pediatric hospital care; so about 900.00 overall.
My hospital bill was around $17,000and my little ones was hardly anything. I didn't pay anything, thank heavens, because we had two insurances at the time.
Mine was like $19,000 or something close to it and I have to pay $500 out of pocket, but thats just the delivery part!
Isn't it crazy what all this stuff costs? Farty's surgery and stay in the NICU cost around $100,000 for 2 weeks. Thank GOd for insurance, even with it's deductibles and other assorted pains in my ass.
Pretty crazy. I didn't add mine up but because I'm double covered I paid barely anything. When I had jaw surgery the whole hospital bill was over $50K. My jaw dropped when I opened that envelope!
That is insane...but I do love the fact that you used the phrase gas passer in a post, LOL!
