I will be sterilized next wednesday.

I had my 6w postpartum checkup today.

First thing he asked was "What are you going to do about birth control?" And I said "we need to do something, because I can't seem to stop having unprotected sex!". heh. I told him I wanted to get my tubes tied. He suggested doing the Essure procedure instead.

The Essure procedure is where the doc threads wires up each fallopian tube. In the time period of 3 months, tissue will grow around the wires, completely blocking the passageways. At the end of the 3 months, a low pressure HSG is performed to ensure tubes are blocked. During the 3 months, another form of birth control must be used.

I told him I had too much anxiety about getting another painful HSG, as the 4 I received all hurt like hell. They hurt worse when I had a blocked tube. I also didn't want to get an in-office procedure done, as the IUD insertion itself hurt me. I've just had too much done down there, I don't want anymore pain.

He had a solution. He'll do the procedure for me in the hospital, under full anesthesia. And as for the HSG, he said it's low pressure, much different than the high pressure ones used when they are trying to open your tubes. I'm still a bit anxious over the HSG nevertheless. I'm going to have him prescribe me some valium or something to calm my ass down when I need to get it done. That should help. Plus, while I'm under, it'll give him opportunity to go take a look around and make sure everything is healing right from the retained placenta.

Right on. It's all scheduled for next Wednesday at 9am.

And for something fucked up? I was handed a bill for $1,100 today, $850 more than I expected. The billing girl came right up front when she heard me go "WHOA! What am I being billed for?" and we took a look.

Seems the office made a small mistake. When coding the emergency d&c which was performed to ~save my life~, they accidently coded it as "abortion".

I have never heard of that Essure thing. My doc never mentioned it. Is it something new? The plan is for DH to be snipped but it's still a few months out.

Hopefully things go well and you'll have no pain.

Sounds like a great plan. As for the coding error, that cracks me up. I mean if you're at the insurance company looking at the the procedures of the day, abortion just doesn't fit with singleton live birth at the same freaking time. They should've checked up with the hospital before sending the bill. Honestly!

I don't know if it's new or not. It's in the rack of pamphlets regarding birth control in their office.

Tom is willing to get snipped, but it's going to take some doing to get him to get it done. He'll stall and find reasons to push the appointment. I want birth control NOW since apparently I'm a little whore. So I'll just get it done. Bonus is I can get it done next week and it'll be free because I've reached my out of pocket maximum from the birth and my trip to the ER last week.

Elana, that's what I thought! I mean, come on!

Live Birth: 9:39am
Abortion: 9:45am

Nobody is that fertile.

I'm not going to get into just how reading that charging for a D+C is so much ore expensive if it's for a TOP (abortion) than for another reason. Sounds like a layer of moral judgement in the billing system.

Actually it makes me twitchy all over.

But good news on the bc plan. :)

Nancy....I had the essure procedure done after Taylor was born. The recovery time for me was less than 1 day. I'm glad I went with it and I think that since the doctor has agreed to do it at the hospital and under anesthesia you'll be happy too. For the follow up procedure, the doctor prescribed valium...one for the night before and one for the day of. He also had me take a couple pain pills along with ibuprofen before the procedure. I've had HSG's done before and this one was vasatly different. It was a much lower pressure and with the pills it wasn't that bad at all. The wose part was the fluid coming back out of me when it was done. Good luck to you! and BTW...you have an absolutely gorgeous family! Karl, Allison, and Ella are beautiful and you look fabulous! Love the new ink!

Oh goodness no. It didn't cost more. My insurance company just doesn't cover abortions, so I would have to pay the entire $850 cost out of pocket.

Whoa--next week. I guess I'm glad you finally have a solution. I know it's going to be hard for you to deal with the fact that it's permanent. Big hugs to you--you've spent so much time TTC and jumping through hurdles. I guess the only relief would be no more wondering and waiting.

That sucks that they coded it wrong--dumb fucks! How many people wouldn't have questioned the bill? Me, probably.

That coding cracks me up. Yes - you had a baby AND an abortion on the same day. Great...

Insurance companies don't pay any attention at all. They were probably happier than hell to have something to deny. I hated dealing with them when I worked in the medical field.

Good luck with the procedure! I had a friend who did it and it wasn't bad for her at all. That rocks that your doc is going to go full anesthesia!

Glad you have a solution you're happy with. And hey, you get to be put under! I hope it's as easy as the doc makes it sound.

That's funny! My nephew had a tramatic birth and was in the NICU for 12 days. My sister got a letter from blue cross saying that they couldn't cover his bill because it was a work related injurey!

I was reading up about that essure and it sounds great but still kind of freaks me out. I thought scar tissue was bad? Can't it grow out of control?

FWIW, my mom's a CNM and she highly recommends Essure - she says it's a great alternative to tying the tubes.

Glad you'll be going under - I'd request that too, I like anesthesia...almost as much as I like vicodin ;) heh.

You little whore:) I'd say you are one damn lucky woman to be wanting, needing, demanding sex when you have a five week old baby. Rock on sister.
I doubt you'll have a hard time with the permanence of your decision. Yeah we love having babies; yeah it's a tad hard to say goodbye to that part of our lives but we put it in perspective.
Birth control worries are down right annoying. Having sex when you want without barriers, or pills or planning ahead is a damn powerful incentive.

nancy said...

heh. I was wondering if anyone would catch the whore comment.

And you are right - I have no problem with deciding of the permanence of the birth control. We are not having more children. It's just the aspect of living with it as time wears on that will make me sad.

So glad you found a perm solution and will have it done in a way you are comfortable. I can't believe you and the sex...I haven't had sex in like 5 months (yes, poor DH) and no desire for it.

Ah insurance companies and their stupid crap. I called with a question about my hep pump yesterday and they told me that I wasn't on the insurance plan. Right, that is because as I said three times my name is Erin not Karen...

Nikki said...

Abortion?? Seriously - the billing department should get their act together. Like Elana said - you couldn't be having an abortion and giving birth to a live baby at the same time! Eye Roll....

Good luck with the sterilization procedure!

wtf. insurance sucks.

Good luck next week- it sounds like your doc is aawesome & really takes what you want into consideration.

be careful now until it kicks in... little whore! ;o)

Being a whore in the bedroom is NOT bad news..esp. when you told me it had been months just a little while ago..so congrats on that! Also, congrats on doing something that works for you and I work w/insurance companies all day. They LOVE to deny anything, even to the point of just not reading the paperwork. They suck! Good luck for next week!

I am wondering the same thing about the Essure procedure. Isn't scar tissue painful? I had my tubes tied and I was under. I was SO scared because it was my first surgery, but it was fine and I, obviously, lived ;o) Good luck! glad you were able to make a decision that fits you.

What a wonderful doctor you have! It sounds like a great plan.

Yikes..Sounds scary...Ugh...anything surgery related scares the crap outta me personally!

Nice error...At least ya caught it though!!!

Scar tissue doesn't necessarily hurt. I had my entire uterus filled with scar tissue and I didn't even know. It hurts when it's in places that need to move/stretch and the scar tissue keeps it from moving like it needs to. I'm sure my OB wouldn't be recommending something that will cause me pain the rest of my life.

maybe when you are under they can remove your gall bladder and give you a 2 for 1. he he!

Motel Manager said...

Wow, that coding error -- must be because there are so many abortions immediately after delivery? WTF?

The Essure thing sounds like a good alternative if you can get the drugs. FWIW, I had to take a few meds before my IVF transfers because I have a corkscrewy cervix, and they gave me Busp.ar, which I found much better than Val.ium.

My friend Annette had the coils put in - Essure. I'll send her on over here to comment about it. I know she's been really happy with it, but not the HSG. Her doc did not give her any drugs or have her take Ibuprofen before or anything though.

My SIL had the Essure procedure 3 years ago (after her twins). It seems to have worked just fine. Good luck.

You're certainly getting your money's worth out of the insurance company this year, aren't you? I think the 2 for 1 gall bladder deal is a good way to go too.

Shinejil said...

Wow, Nancy! Six minutes of pregnancy. That's a record.

You think that would have set off some alarm bells...

Glad you got some support from your doc. Hope the valium helps.

Hi Nancy I am Annette Krista's friend. I had the Essure procedure done in May 2009 it was very easy and very painless. The procedure itself was so easy I had no pain at all just a little bit of spotting for a few days after. The did put me out and was done at the hospital. The HSG test wasn't bad just a little bit of pressure and uncomfortable due to the fact it was being done on an X-ray table. I didnt take any pain meds for either the procedure or the HSG test. My procedure went very fast I got to the hospital at 6:00a.m and was at Chipotle eating at 11:00a.m. The HSG test took about an hour. I am very happy I had this done. I choose this due to the fact they didnt have to cut me open. At the end they do give you a card that says that you have a this procedure done I quess there is a small possiblity that you could set off metal detectors at the airport. But they said they hadn't heard of the happening to anyone yet.

Annette,

Thank you for all the info! I really appreciate it.

well, if you do it, I hope it doesn't hurt too bad

Good luck with the procedure and glad your doc is understanding about your apprehension. EEK about the office billing error!

Sorry I am late to this post. Where the heck was this when I had my tubes tied, burnt, and mangled? It grew back in less than 4 years and I ended up with an ectopic and had both tubes completely removed. This might have saved me a lot of heartache!
